BMKG denies the issue of a total solar eclipse August 2, 2025 which is called making the earth dark 6 minutes

About Semarang – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has denied the viral issue of the total solar eclipse which is said to occur on August 2, 2025 and make the earth pitch black for six minutes.

Through an official upload on the Instagram account @infobmkg on Friday (1/8/2025), BMKG confirmed that the news was not true or hoaks.

According to BMKG’s explanation, a solar eclipse is an event when sunlight is blocked by the moon, so that parts of the earth do not receive the light.

This phenomenon only occurs during the new moon phase, when the position of the sun, moon, and earth is in a straight line.

However, BMKG said that the new moon phase in August 2025 occurred on August 23, and was not followed by a solar eclipse, both in Indonesia and in other parts of the world.

“Based on BMKG data, the new month phase in August 2025 occurred on August 23, 2025, and at that time there was no solar eclipse,” BMKG wrote.

Throughout 2025, there will only be four eclipse phenomena, namely:

1. Total lunar eclipse on March 14, 2025, seen in eastern Indonesia when the total phase ends.

2. Partial solar eclipse on March 29, 2025, cannot be observed from Indonesia.

3. Total lunar eclipse on September 7, 2025, can be witnessed from Indonesian territory.

4. Partial solar eclipse on September 21, 2025, is also not visible from Indonesia.

BMKG also quoted information from NASA, which said that the total solar eclipse in question would actually occur on August 2, 2027, not 2025.

The eclipse did not cross the territory of Indonesia, but through Morocco, Spain, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia.

“So, the issue that on August 2, 2025 will occur a total solar eclipse that will cause the earth’s dark for 6 minutes or hoaks,” said BMKG.

BMKG also added that the total solar eclipse only caused darkness in certain areas affected by the shadow of the moon umbra, not the entire surface of the earth. ***
